IEEE-TSEC EMBS Event - HELIX

IEEE-TSEC EMBS conducted its event, HELIX on the 6th of March which consisted of visits to labs and diagnostic centers in Mumbai for the Biomedical and Biotechnology students. We visited Metropolis Clinical Laboratories, Worli and P.H. Medical Center and Unique Diagnostics.

Our field trip began with Metropolis Clinical Laboratories, where we saw the equipment and instruments present in different labs such as Microbiology, Immunochemistry and Haemotology. Metropolis offers one of the widest test menus in the region -–more than 3600 tests ranging from routine to esoteric and has the best technologies ranging from RIA & CLIA to Biochip Analyzers & PCR, and Real time PCR to DNA sequencing.

Next we visited P.H. Medical Centre where the students were briefed upon the working of the MRI and CT scan and various other testing equipments. This was particularly helpful to the biomedical students. Lastly we visited Unique Diagnostics. Here we witnessed the internal functioning of a Coulter counter which is used to count RBC’s, WBC’s and haemoglobin content and also a Coagulator that measured the time required by a blood sample to clot.

We got a good response from the students from the first year and second year of engineering. The visit was a huge success with an overall strength of above 40 students from biomedical and biotechnology department. We plan to conduct many such events during the course of this year for the benefit of all the members of EMBS-TSEC.
